Gals Agro, together with scientists from Uman National Agrarian University, conducted a study on the efficiency of using different types of hazelnut harvesting in a large 425-hectare orchard cultivated by the holding in Kyiv region with Italian varieties. Mechanized harvesting, compared to fully manual, reduces the cost of nuts by at least half.

The Head of Projects at Gals Agro Holding, Yurii Strilets, shared this information during the webinar “A New Era of Hazelnut Orchards: Towards Success.”

The main goal was to determine how mechanical, manual, and combined harvesting methods differ, and which factors influence these differences. The study results confirmed that mechanized harvesting, compared to fully manual harvesting, reduces the cost of nuts by at least half.

“In principle, such calculations could have been done independently or even found online,” summarized Yevhen Laiter. “However, we wanted to carry them out together with a scientific institution to eliminate possible errors. Besides, this research is the first of its kind in our relatively young industry and can serve other producers. It’s not just a basic calculation but a scientific study that will be recorded and form a foundation for future planning and the development of hazelnut growing in Ukraine.”
